DIGITAL BREAST TOMOSYNTHESIS
The new frontier in breast cancer detection
Digital Mammography is currently the most advance technique in breast cancer detection. However, it still presents a lack of sensitivity and specificity, especially when examining dense breasts. This happens because the bi-dimensional representation of overlapping tissues is sometimes difficult to read.
Other diagnostic imaging modalities such as CT and MR, are currently using a volumetric imaging system (Tomography) which minimizes the risk of misreading in case overlapping tissues. A Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) system takes a series of low dose X-ray exposures (projections) at different angles, these slices are then reconstructed in images of the breast at different heights from the detector. This means that any object detected during the exam is sharply displayed on multiple slices and this enables a better evaluation of the nature, the position and the size of the suspected lesion.
Metaltronica DBT system
After having carried out researches and tests, Metaltronica R&D department chose for its DBT system a Full-Field geometry where the X-ray tube rotates continuously around the compressed breast over an arc with double range of 10° or 36°. This technology allows at the same time to gather sufficient information on larger volumes of tissue with low noise and high image quality.
Tomo images can be acquired with C-arm placed in any preferred projection angle. After a scanning time of less than 20 s, an advanced algorithm starts to reconstruct the breast tissue in 1 mm thick slices.
Amorphous Selenium Detector
Amorphous Selenium is the most advanced technology to produce the highest signal/noise ratio and offers greater efficiency compared to other known technologies. With Amorphous Selenium the X-Radiation is transformed directly into electric charges without relying on an intermediate step to convert X-Ray energy to light. So the direct detection avoids a light diffusion effect that degrades image quality, produces a clear signal profile and preserves the image sharpness.
Solutions for every operating need
Helianthus DBT uses an anti-scatter grid specifically designed for tomosynthesis. It is based on the same technology used to realize semiconductors and it allows obtaining a homogeneous distribution of the exposure. This way images are sharper and the dose meets EUREF requirements.
The use of grid for any exam, except the magnification views, makes Helianthus DBT a fast and complete solution to obtain excellent diagnostic images in 20 screening, 3D tomosynthesis and stereotactic biopsy.
Choosing the COMBO mode, the operator can acquire 30+20 digital mammograms with the same compression and an overall dose lower of EUREF limits for conventional mammography.
Ergonomics and user friendly
Metaltronica has paid particular attention in designing Helianthus DBT system in order to make it extremely easy to use for the operator and comfortable for the patient.
The movements of isocentric C-Arm can be operated by four multi-switches placed under the displays and on both sides of the X-ray tube.
Helianthus DBT is provided with an advanced dynamic automatic collimator. The unit is able to detect the format/position of compression paddles and to select automatically the proper collimation field.
Touchscreen color displays
Two rotating controllers allow to set the maximum force value and to execute a fine manual compression. Two color touchscreen displays show information concerning compression force, compressed breast thickness, collimation format, magnification factor, projection angle and patient name and allow the operator to select breast laterality and ACR codes. The displays also have a technical check function for an easy system configuration and a fast diagnosis of the system status.
Control and Acquisition Station
The Acquisition Workstation of Helianthus DBT, integrated with an anti-X protective barrier, includes:
– 15″ touchscreen display to fully control mammography system and exam settings
– High definition LCD preview monitor (3 MP)
– Completely redesigned software to simplify the use of the device and increase the workflow
– Trackball and scroll wheel to access image reviewing tools
